What Is Indie Rock?
Indie Rock is a term to describe bands or artists that is signed to small record labels or DIY status. The musical style is too diverse that it is hard to pin point exactly what is indie rock. The Strokes and The Smiths are both Indie Rock but they definitely do not sound the same. Some platform like CDBaby decided to remove it off their genre list as it is confusing. A guideline I always put for myself, Indie Rock doesn't sound like mainstream rock. It doesn't sound polish and the term can be interchangeable with Alternative Rock. That brings me to the question, what is Nirvana then?
Growing up in Indie culture, it is about DIY and being different. I pretty much love the sound of Britpop, Garage Rock, Psychedelic Rock and Punk Blues. All those genres are part of the Indie Rock umbrella. I also like the sound of Ska, Reggae, Punk, Blues and many more, as long as it doesn't sound polish. When I write music, I throw whatever I love into the mix and create my own sound. Do check out my original music on Spotify.
Style wise, Indie Rock is about being yourself. The Indie style has its standard. Skinny pants(or baggy ones like The Stoned Roses), Vintage T-shirt and accessories etc. They are more like guidelines rather than rules. I love mixing the Swinging 60's style with Bohemian/Gypsy vibes accessories and just enough Punk thrown into the mix. If you're into Indie style, it is all about mixing what you like and create the best version of yourself.
To hell with rules.
